Fast Weight Loss With The Grapefruit Diet A Critique

Posted by admin on 26 Nov 2009 | Tagged as: Fast Weight Loss Diets

You are determined to lose fat and you’re determined to do it quickly. Nothing is going to stop and you have the grapefruit diet in mind. The grapefruit diet sounds good in paper and some celebrities even swear by it. So what’s there to lose you plan to do this diet that promises to shed 10 pounds of fat over 12 days. This actually sounds like a miracle diet and if we prorate the 10 pounds over 1 month then theoretically we can lose 25 pounds in 1 month. This indeed would be a fast weight loss diet. So what does this diet consist of? Are we to eat only grapefruit for breakfast, lunch and dinner? Well, not exactly but the idea is to eat a serving or two of grapefruit or grapefruit juice with every meal.

fast-weight-loss-grapefruit-dietGrapefruit is widely believed to be a fruit that increases metabolism and in the process speeds up fat burning. I will not discredit that because there are other foods and drinks that are known to speed up the metabolism. Green tea is one of them and so is coffee so for arguments sake we’ll say that grapefruit works like ephedrine. The issue with the grapefruit diet is the promise that you’ll lose 10 pounds in 12 days. That to put it mildly would be remarkable. You probably could lose that much weight but how much of it would truly be fat? We know we need a calorie deficit 3500 calories to burn off 1 pound of fat. And even so it is highly unlikely that the 1 pound will not be entirely fat but rather fat and protein (muscle).

Again however for argument sake let us say that with the grapefruit diet we will have tremendous fast weight loss and all the weight lost will be from fat deposit. Knowing that the average calorie intake is 2000 calories that means we can not eat a single piece of food and also must cut an additional 1500 calories to lose 10 pounds in 12 days. This is impossible and the grapefruit diet is fad. The numbers do not lie because how is it humanely possible to lose 10 pounds in 12 days when if fasted for the entire duration you would only lose 6.8 pounds.

Some diets make sense and some are a way for fast weightloss but the grapefruit diet is not one of them. This diet has been around for a long time sine the 1930’s but this fact does not mean it is effective. Many other diet fallacies have been around just as long and continue to be popular these days. Think about how losing fat is possible and think about of this supposedly fast weight loss diet makes sense to you. We did the calculations and the grapefruit diet simply does not add up. Give it a pass and try something that is not bogus.
